What is architectural metalwork?

I design, and then produce and install, individual pieces of metalwork (e.g. sculptures, gates, railings, balconies, conventional and spiral staircases, candlestands, door handles) according to individual client wishes. Each piece is different and each has been designed for its specific location.

I also restore and conserve existing pieces. I replace worn or broken parts using original materials and finishes in order to provide something that is as good as, and sometimes better, than the original.

What materials do I use?

The materials that I use are mainly mild steel, wrought iron, stainless steel and aluminium. The finished material can be painted, galvanised, powder coated, anodised or even covered in gold leaf.

The production techniques that I use range from those of the blacksmith in a traditional forge to overseeing computer controlled laser cutting and etching.

What drives the design?

I work closely with clients to ensure 'no surprises'. I provide initial drawings and, where possible, those designs can be superimposed onto site photographs. I can provide samples of material and also of material finishes. Where appropriate I can also provide scaled prototypes. My website gives some indication of the enormous variety that can be achieved with the right combination of design and material.

The Ironmongers

I am grateful for the support provided to me by the Worshipful Company of Ironmongers, the City of London Livery Company. They have been active in supporting quality standards in the craft of metalworking since the year 1300 and I am proud to be a part of that heritage.
